The Union of Bulgarian Foresters is a successor of the historical traditions of Bulgarian foresters in order to strengthen the role and reputation of forester society and contribute to the development of the Forestry Sector in Bulgaria.
The Union of Foresters adopted the Charter of Bulgarian Forests, where the unique role of Bulgarian forests for the future development of the country and the historical responsibility of the state and public institutions for their protection were highlighted. A national forest policy programme and moral principles of the Bulgarian forester were adopted, where the role and responsibilities of the forester as a specialist and state employee were specified and was provided a basis for public trust in the professional and personal characteristics of the forester - as a creator and citizen.
The main aims of the programme are as follows:
- To keep exclusive state ownership of forests with national importance;
- Possibilities for different forms of forest ownership, with equal rights before the law;
- Unified control of the adherence to the law of forest fund, regardless the type of ownership, carried out by independent department;
- Management and utilization of all forests included in the forest fund through silvicultural projects;
- To enhance the rights and obligations of conservancy employees and provide their social protection.
The power and responsibilities of the Union are in its ability to assess correctly the public events and processes, their reflection on Bulgarian forests and to draw up the guidelines of forester society, which leads to improved forest management and forest preservation, and to signify forester's culture and forester's professional skills.
As a non-government organization, the Union aims at being independent public guarantor protecting the national interests by carrying out the forest policy and working for enhancing the rights and reputation of Bulgarian foresters.
The Union of Foresters cooperates for better forest management and utilization, takes active part in the development of forest legislation, forest preservation strategy and the development of forestry in Bulgaria.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters along with the Forestry Department takes part in organizing the Forest Week, celebrated annually in the first week of April, as well as in nominating for the honorary title "Forester of the Year", awarded at the opening of the Forest Week.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters along with the National Forestry Board takes part in different activities related to issues concerning forests and forest management.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters has its press release - the newspaper "Bulgarian Forest", where the attitude of the union concerning issues, connected with the life of the union and forestry in the country are presented. The newspaper is a tribune of forester society to express problems, expertise and opinions in order to improve the activities in
the forest sector.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters has its "badge of honour", awarded to the members of the union, prominent foresters and scientists in the field of forestry.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters collaborates with other non-government organizations in Bulgaria, the University of Forestry in Sofia, institutes for scientific research in the field of forestry, wood harvesting and woodworking companies, etc.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters collaborates with similar national and foreign organizations.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters established contacts with the European forestry community in the spring of 1996, participating in the fourteenth congress of the Union of European Foresters.
The Union of Bulgarian Foresters has been a regular member of the Union of European Foresters since 1999, having been an associated member for the previous three years. Bulgarian Union delegations have attended all the conferences and congresses since 1996. Our country put forward its candidature to host the regular annual conference in 2006.

As members of the Union of European Foresters Bulgaria was the host country of the Governing Council Meeting in 2006.
